About the Item

Monumental mid-century hammered copper wall panel depicting a dancing African warrior with spear and shield, in the style of Gabriel Kalumba Tshung-Manu. Richly patinated surface with red and gold tones, a powerful example of African modernist sculpture from the 1960s–70s. A rare and striking life-size hammered copper wall panel sculpture of a dancing African warrior, created circa 1960-1970 in the spirit of Zairian artist Gabriel Kalumba Tshung-Manu (1940–2019). This impressive low-relief composition depicts a muscular warrior in motion, holding a spear and shield, his body rendered in powerful anatomical detail, with fine embossed surface textures and a warm copper patina accented by red and gold tones. Kalumba Tshung-Manu, a pioneer of postcolonial African modernism, studied Fine Arts in Lubumbashi and later in Belgium before returning to Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo). His work was celebrated internationally after winning the Grand Prix at the World Festival of Negro Arts in Dakar (Senegal), 1966, in the “Contemporary Plastic Arts” category. Strongly inspired by ancestral African iconography, rhythm, and dance, his monumental wall panels in copper and brass became symbols of national artistic identity and modern craftsmanship. This panel, executed with the same refined technique and dynamic composition typical of his oeuvre, is an evocative tribute to the strength and dignity of African cultural heritage. The contrast between polished copper surfaces and the expressive oxidized background creates a stunning three-dimensional effect, ideal as a statement piece for modern or eclectic interiors. Not signed. Origin: Democratic Republic of the Congo, circa 1960-1970. Technique: hammered and embossed copper on wooden frame. Dimensions: H 182 cm (71.6 in), W 78 cm (30.7 in), D 7 cm (2.7 in).
