About the Item
Antique Leather Hay Caps, made by the Symmes Hay Cap Company of Quebec, circa 1889. We have three of these. They are priced at $2250 each or $5800 for the set of three. With their undulating shapes, large scale (51" diameter) and wonderfully patinated leather, they would make a great wall sculpture. These hay caps were originally used by farmers to protect haystacks from the rain so that they didn't ferment or lose nutritional value until the haystacks could be moved to permanent storage. They are constructed of pressed and molded wood pulp wrapped in varnished leather for durability. Another example of a Symmes Hay Cap is in the collection of the Eaton Corner Museum in Quebec. The depths of these hay caps range from 2.75" to 9" from the wall.
