About the Item

Gorgeously cast in bronze, given a pale gold patina, and set in a walnut plaque, this quintessential Art Deco bas relief presents a delicious conceit: Its classical figure is holding a cornucopia overflowing not with the produce of the earth, but with the packaging products of 1930s America. Boxes, tins and containers of all kinds are tumbling out, all imagined by Gerta Ries, a young sculptor later known for her medals commemorating Jewish civic and cultural leaders. This plaque was sponsored by the Modern Packaging Company and given to Ben Burk, Inc in 1938. Burk was a Boston distillery most well known for publishing the long-running Old Mr. Boston Bartender's Guide, but the firm was also known for the innovative packaging of a wide range of alcoholic products. Note that the map of America in the background marks the many offices and plants of Modern Packaging.
