About the Item
Wall Sculpture by Anna Petrus
Näfveqvarns Bruk, Sweden, circa 1927
Swedish Grace
This powerful and beautifully modeled lion mask wall sculpture is an exceptional work by Anna Petrus (1886–1949), one of the most distinctive sculptors of the Swedish Grace movement. Produced at Näfveqvarns Bruk around 1927, the piece exemplifies the period’s synthesis of classical inspiration, sculptural force, and refined industrial craftsmanship.
Cast in iron, the lion’s face is rendered with remarkable depth and vitality. The expressive eyes, flowing mane, and commanding presence give the sculpture a strong architectural character, clearly intended to function as both ornament and symbol. Lion masks such as this were often conceived as façade or wall-mounted elements, drawing on ancient and Renaissance precedents while reinterpreted through the restrained elegance of Swedish Grace.
The surface shows a rich, dark patina developed over time, enhancing the sculptural modeling and lending the piece a sense of gravitas and authenticity. Despite minor condition issues consistent with age and original architectural use, the sculpture retains its striking visual impact.
According to provenance information, the sculpture originally adorned a building on Väddö in the Stockholm archipelago, later remaining within the same family before being acquired by the present owner — a history that further underscores its architectural and cultural significance.

Anna Petrus
Anna Petrus was a Swedish sculptor, graphic artist, designer and dancer, born in 1886, in Uppsala, Sweden. Anna also contributed to the design of the Swedish pavilion for the “1925 Paris Exhibition”.
