Impressive Boiserie panel by its exceptional Artistic work, its great condition and its fabulous Provenance. In 1777, during the reign of louis XVI, Claude Baudard de Saint-James,General Treasurer of the "Marine" (French term for Navy) since 1758 acquires the Hotel Particulier situated on 12 Place Vendome ,the most valued place in Paris (still today). Two years later he finances a Modernisation campaign of the 2nd floor (first floor in France) that is under the responsibility of F.J.Bellange, a famous Architect. The giltwood boiseries of this Salon were confided to the "Freres Rousseau" who had been nominated by Marie Antoinette "Sculpteur des batiments de la Reine and also "Peintre et Decorateur de la Reine." They were considered unanimously as the "creme de la creme" in France at the time. This Boiserie panel is one of the many done for this Salon, in different sizes (walls and doors) but all having the same Merchant marine allegory with a mix of Ocean (sails, monster of the deep) and Navigation (anchor, cords, hatchet) attributes as well as more personal one e.g. scepter and crown to recognize the importance in his field of the Sponsor and caduceous, symbol of trade also. This magnificent carving has been water gilt mostly with gold leaves but also silver gilt on some pieces as caduceous and hatchet. It rest on its original light blue gray panel. Mr Baudard de Saint-James deceased in 1787. His spouse sold a large part of the contend. And certain decor elements, like this panel, were remove early 20th century. This Hotel Particulier saw Frederic Chopin living and dying there and it is there also that Napoleon III met Eugenia who will become his wife. Today it is occupied by the famous Jeweller Maison Chaumet(Group LVMH) who use the 2nd floor as "Salon de Reception" where one can see same trophyon doors. PS google "Chaumet The salon of the former Baudard de saint-James Hotel" and will see several doors covered with same trophy.
