This detailed relief is depicting Pierre Corneille (1606–1684), the celebrated French dramatist often regarded as the founder of French classical tragedy standing in period dress, holding a manuscript. The border is richly carved with flowers, foliage, and scrollwork, typical of late 19th-century French craftsmanship.
