TOYIN LOYE (b. 1959, Nigeria)
Now based in the Hague, Toyin Loye was born into a traditional royal Yoruba house in the province of Ijebu-Jesa, Nigeria. The area is rich in customs and traditions, all of which had a profound influence on him as a child and continue to do so on his art and in his poetry.
His witty aluminium cut-outs incorporating twine and rope are a reflection on western consumerism taking hold in African markets where fake European designer brands are offered alongside, and often instead of, everyday necessities. Consumerism is no less an integral aspect of Nigerian life than elsewhere, yet the mode of transporting these goods remains age-old: piled high on the head.
Examples of his work are in the collections of Kofi Annan, and Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, and the Gallery of Modern Art, Osaka.
