About the Item
A beautiful and extremely high quality Continental 20th century Louis XVI st. white Carrara and Rouge Griotte marble freestanding plaque of Joseph Carlino, sculpted by Remo Liverzani. The most decorative plaque is raised by a beautiful Rouge Griotte marble base with a fine mottled border. The white Carrara marble plaque above displays lovely foliate rinceau scrolled patterns with fine rosettes, charming oak leaves and acorns centering the name. The oval medallion at the center is a finely detailed portrait of the handsome Joseph Carlino framed within a beautiful foliate border. Richly sculpted scrolled foliate movements and rosettes extend up each side to the most impressive family crest above flanked by charming cornucopias.
Muzio “Remo” Liverzani (born in Italy circa the late 1870s–early 1880s) was a skilled stone-cutter and sculptor who likely worked on the monumental Altare della Patria (Monument to Vittorio Emanuele II) in Rome before immigrating to New York City around 1909–1911. His U.S. naturalization and draft records place him professionally in the stone-craft and sculptural trades, and existing signed marble pieces attributed to “Remo Liverzani” confirm his ongoing practice as a sculptor in the Italian-marble tradition.
