About the Item

Expertly and sensitively carved from a slab of mahogany and finished with paint the color of gray flannel, this superb wall sculpture depicts two women and one man at the dockyard, carrying baskets and bowls of fish and tending to the fishing nets. The attenuated figures and stylized faces indicate that the sculpture was carved in the 1950s, and the bas relief detail is very fine. The fishing nets in particular, where the sculptor cut through the wood to leave the nets hanging in air, are a tour de force of wood carving.
