About the Item
A contemporary cast paper relief sculpture titled "The Faint" by Frank Gallo. Hand signed in pencil with an annotation of 75/150 on the lower left. An ethereal composition sculpted entirely in white, allowing light and shadow to animate the figure’s gentle curves and delicate features. Gallo’s mastery of the cast paper medium is evident in the subtle detailing and tactile softness, creating an impression of serene intimacy and quiet strength. A pioneer in sculptural realism, Gallo's innovative technique blends traditional form with contemporary minimalism. This artwork exemplifies his signature approach—merging classical beauty with experimental materiality—to produce a piece that is both sculptural and painterly. A compelling example of Gallo's celebrated career in American figurative art. From a private collection. Dimensions: 38"h x 54"w x 3.5"d (framed). In very good condition.
Frank Gallo (1933–2019) was a renowned American sculptor celebrated for his pioneering work in cast paper and fiberglass relief sculpture. A graduate of the University of Illinois and Cranbrook Academy of Art, Gallo gained national recognition in the 1960s for redefining figurative realism through innovative materials. His work is held in major public collections including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Gallo also served as a professor at the University of Illinois, where he influenced a generation of contemporary sculptors. His distinctive approach earned him acclaim as a leading figure in American figurative sculpture.

Frank Gallo
Frank Gallo, a sculptor was born in Toledo, Ohio, in 1933. From 1960, he was a professor of sculpture at the University of Illinois. He studied art from 1951–59 at the University of Toledo, Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and the State University of Iowa. In the late 1950s, Gallo began to use the material polyester resin reinforced with fiberglass, which gives his sculpture a viscous finish. Although he is noted for his studies of women, some of whom are fancifully and colorfully clad, Gallo has also made sculptures of men, including Abraham Lincoln.
