Exceptional French carved walnut relief panel depicting Jean Racine (1639–1699) — one of France’s greatest tragedians, alongside Corneille and Molière - signed and dated 1889 by J. Stephanière.
This beautifully hand-carved work shows the celebrated 17th-century playwright holding a manuscript of Phèdre, framed by deeply carved foliage, grapes, and flowers. The reverse bears a handwritten biographical note summarising Racine’s life and literary achievements — a charming personal touch from the sculptor.
A refined example of late 19th-century French craftsmanship, this panel would make an elegant addition to a library, study, or collection of literary art.
