About the Item
Small size version of a Danish mangle board (clothing and bedding press) dated from ca. 1750-1800.
Made of wood richly decorated with hand-carved geometric patterns and a horse as handle. With original reddish brown and green paint.

The wooden mangle board has a long tradition in Europe and especially the Scandinavian countries and goes back to at least the mid 15th century. In the 17th you find more richly decorated mangle boards and painted with one to three colors. They now became a courtship gift offered by the man to his bride-to-be prior to the wedding day. The production of mangle board peaked at the end of the 18th century.
