About the Item
Wonderful and LARGE terracotta wall plaque by Italian ceramist Giovanni de Simone. Weighing approximately 30 pounds, the plaque measures 22.25" high, 20.63" wide and 1" deep. The hand-built sculpted surface features a charming scene of circus performers.
This piece is in very good condition. Upon close inspection, there are small chips and glaze losses around the outer edges of the plaque. This is most likely from large pieces of the thick glaze flaking off--this could even be from the time of firing. There is also crazing, but again, this could original and intentional. All in all, this plaque is impressive for its size, weight and quality and presents beautifully.
This is one of the largest examples of Giovanni de Simone's work and also one of the most desirable subject matters.

Giovanni de Simone
Giovanni De Simone was born in 1930. He opened his studio in Palermo, Sicily, soon after the end of World War II. He had worked and studied for a while under the direction of Pablo Picasso and Picasso's influence remained with him until he died in 1991. Giovanni had retired 10 years earlier in 1981.
