About the Item
This rare and important pairing of plaster maquette and bronze panel, sculpted in preparation for a WPA bas relief at the post office in Loudonville, Ohio, was created by Rudolf Henn in 1938. Henn was a respected and successful sculptor in Germany before moving to America at the end of the Depression, creating the boy with fish fountain in Guben as well as several monuments and memorials. In America, he was part of a team of sculptors creating work for the Harlem River Houses, the first federally-funded public housing project in America.

"Algernon Sullivan Plaque, " Rare Bas Relief with Nude Figures by Jules Roine
By Jules-Edouard Roiné 1
Located in Philadelphia, PA
This rare and important relief sculpture honors Algernon Sydney Sullivan, one of the most admired and respected attorneys and civic leaders active in New York in the late 19th century. Born a Hoosier, he moved to New York by 1860, and though an ardent abolitionist, felt honor-bound to step forward to defend the sailors of the Confederate ship Savannah, captured by the Union early in the Civil War. He served in the public sector for a decade and fought the Tweed gang. Later, Sullivan created two of the more important and influential law firms in New York in his era -- one of them, Sullivan and Cromwell, continues today -- but he always remained supportive of the poor who could not afford to retain an attorney for legal assistance. In his honor, the Sullivan Fountain was erected in Van Cortlandt...
