About the Item
Beautifully carved and painted, this remarkable Art Deco panel depicts Mercury and his staff the caduceus, encircled with serpents, which has served as the symbol of the medical profession for centuries. This piece was sculpted by a wood carving shop in upstate New York, where much of America's finest Arts
Crafts furniture was made, and here the carver uses the same white oak that was so favoured in the early 20th century. This was clearly created by a fine wood carver for promotional and illustrative purposes, its size and detail making it a portable and useful demonstration of his art.
