About the Item

A rare, hand-made wall mask dating from the 1950s, produced in Germany by Achatit, a workshop established by Hans and Hanneliese Schirmer in Cologne in 1948 (see original label on the back). This real size mask, sometimes referred to as a death-mask, portrays an emperor crowned with laurel, blending classical iconography with the refined craftsmanship of mid-century design. The piece is executed in achatit, a distinctive non-ceramic material and registered trademark of the company. This innovative medium was created by boiling finely ground stone with sawdust and a binder, then casting the mixture in a mold. Once set, the surface was polished with agate stones—an origin reflected in the material’s name. With its dignified subject and sculptural presence, the mask serves not only as a testament to inventive mid-century techniques but also as a striking decorative object, equally suited to classical and modern interiors. In good vintage condition. No cracks, no chips, no repairs. Minor signs of wear, especially on the tip of the nose, consistent with age (see photos). Dimension: height 21 cm/ 8 1/4", width 18.5 cm/ 7 1/4", depth 10 cm/ 4". Weight: 520 g/ 1.15 lb DDP shipping to the US (includes 15% import tariff)
