Monumental Cubist Phoenix Relief Architectural Plaque by George Nocito

About the Item

5 feet tall by 3 feet wide. An absolute unique cubist sculpture for interior and exterior applications as an architectural highlight to a building entrance, foyer or external facade. George Nocito (1917-1977) was a noted sculptor who specialized in architectural relief sculpture. He created the 50 foot bronze relief sculpture and large aluminum fountain in 1961 for the new Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. His work appeared as an major architectural feature in many Mid-Century Modern buildings, include a 120 square foot relief sculpture in the lobby of 635 Madison Ave on NYC's Upper East Side, the Italian Alital ia terminal at JFK Airport and the Skidmore, Owings and Merrill in addition to the Harris Bank Building in Chicago, to name just a few. In the late 1960s he served as the head of the Creative Arts Center at WVU and then went on to become the chairman of the art department at the University of Delaware. This incredible sculpture was created by Nocito in 1963. It was discovered in the basement of his house where he resided. Depicted is a Phoenix from Greek Mythology in the cubist style and gives the impression almost of a fossil. The person photographed is 5" 8" for perspective. Precise measures are 59" x 37.5" inclusive of frame and 4.5" deep. Abstract shapes with a distinct cubist flair can be found in the details of this piece. Weighing around 300 pounds, it is produced by a surface covering of sand and beneath concrete makes the volume and was poured with reenforced steel within the mass to give it strength. Thickness in some areas is as little as 3/4" and greater than 4" in some places making the relief bold and exceptional. How it is hung can be specified in detail by contacting us directly. With the right lighting positioned, it casts shadows and the relief comes to life like no other. Those in the trade who have reviewed the piece to determine construction and composition have commented such a piece would take countless hours to create. Records of Nocito's work over the last half century have remained elusive and we can not be precise as to why this was created or who commissioned this work nor why it remained hidden within his premises for so long. The concrete used is a light weight form of concrete relatively speaking) that is designed to be used indoors or outdoors. Whether it is used in an interior or exterior architectural application highlight, assistance from us will be required. As you can see, there are a few marks upon the surface which have not been remedied due to what your requirements will be. Perhaps you will wish for the image to be stained a certain color or re-framed, thus these remedies (which we will perform and are relatively easy) will not be done until purchase and the specific use is determined.
