Signed and dated: "1967 Israel" on reverse. Israel 1967
“Although two of her works have been included in the Federal Artothek, Paula Mautner is still little known in Germany. Born in Brünn (Czech Republic) in 1919, she founded an artist group in Prague with Robert Piesen, her partner. They moved to Zurich in 1965, and shortly thereafter to Vienna, and from then on lived alternately there and in En Hod, an artists' colony in Israel. The works she created are characterized by a spirituality, a religious element that is vague and mostly motivated by multiple religions. She created sacred works without being influenced solely by Jews or Christians. Her idiosyncratic technique is particularly noteworthy: She combined wooden elements into architectural-looking sculptures, to which she glued paper designed with oil.” (M Graver)
