About the Item

Rare and finely detailed pair of polychrome painted and carved wood reliefs, likely from Valladolid, Spain, dating to the 16th century. Each panel depicts one of the apostles — Saint Peter, holding his symbolic keys, and Saint Paul, with his sword — rendered in high relief with richly colored polychrome decoration and sgraffito detailing. These devotional works reflect the Spanish Renaissance style and are remarkable for their craftsmanship, historical significance, and state of preservation. Dimensions (each): Height: 21.3 in (54 cm) Width: 10.2 in (26 cm) Depth: 1.2 in (3 cm) Condition: Good antique condition. Minor losses and wear consistent with age. Original polychrome largely intact with beautiful patina.

Born in Italy in the 18th century / possibly late 17th century, figural form, each hand carved from a single log, modeled as opposing figures, parcel gilt polychrome decorated, hollowed central cavity with original glazed glass relic viewing panel, rising on integral marbleized scroll foot base.
