About the Item

Pair of 18th-Century English Carved Oak Panels with Mystic Dolphins A fine pair of early carved oak panels, English, 18th century, richly worked with a central motif of stylised dolphins—creatures often imbued with symbolic and mythic meaning. Each dolphin is set within a framed design of flowing scrollwork, punchwork background, and foliate flourishes, the carving executed with impressive precision and vitality. The quality of the joinery and depth of the relief carving showcase the remarkable craftsmanship of English woodworkers of the period. The oak has developed a deep, warm patina over centuries of age, enhancing the sculptural surface and bringing out the natural richness of the grain. These panels would originally have formed part of a larger interior scheme—perhaps incorporated into furniture, wall panelling, or a door—intended to convey both sophistication and symbolic resonance. The dolphin, a motif borrowed from Renaissance ornament, was often associated with protection, swiftness, and safe passage. Today they present beautifully as decorative works of art, equally suited for collectors of early English carving or as striking wall-mounted pieces in an interior setting. Condition Report Both panels remain in very good condition for their age. The oak has developed a rich, even patina with pleasing depth of colour. The carved surfaces retain crisp detail, with light wear and softening commensurate with 18th-century craftsmanship and centuries of handling. Minor surface marks, natural shrinkage, and slight irregularities in the timber are consistent with age and add to the panels’ character. No major losses or structural issues noted. The panels present exceptionally well. Measurement Height: 54 cm / 21.3 inches Width: 19 cm / 7.5 inches Depth: 2 cm. / 0.8 inches Weight: 0.6 k.g / 1.3 lbs
