An exceptional pair of 18th century Italian Baroque cherub corner carvings. Hand carved in solid wood and retaining their original polychrome and gilded surfaces. Each cherub presents a remarkably expressive face, one with an uplifted look of serene devotion and the other with a tender sorrow, a rare emotional duality in architectural sculpture.
Designed for corner placement within a church interior, likely flanking an altar or devotional ensemble. The original angled backs and old iron mounts remain intact, with rich patina and historical surface wear that testify to centuries of sacred presence.
The sculptural modeling displays full Baroque drama: deeply carved hair, powerful voluminous wings, and scrolling acanthus motifs extending below each head. These carvings offer museum-level character in a beautifully manageable scale, ideal for high-end residential interiors or serious sacred art collections.
