About the Item

Pair of Neoclassical Terracotta Wall Plaques After Bertel Thorvaldsen A distinguished pair of relatively large wall plaques in terracotta, modeled after compositions by Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770–1844), one of the most influential figures of European Neoclassicism. Likely produced in the late 19th century, circa the 1880s, these plaques reflect the enduring admiration for Thorvaldsen’s classical vocabulary and lyrical relief work. Each plaque depicts finely modeled allegorical figures rendered in shallow relief, with softly flowing drapery and balanced classical proportions characteristic of Thorvaldsen’s sculptural language. The warm, matte surface of the earthenware enhances the sculptural depth and lends the works a quiet, architectural presence suitable for both traditional and contemporary interiors. Both plaques show minor chips and hairline cracks, as visible in the images. These are not structural and do not run through the material; rather, they contribute to a rich surface patina that attests to age and authenticity. The plaques are signed by an unidentified maker, marked O.E. Å.n., further adding to their historical intrigue. Wear consistent with age and use.
