About the Item
A tour de force example of Art Deco wall sculpture, this depiction of Samson slaying the lion was made by Valentin Shabaeff, a Russian-Canadian artist who settled in Montreal. Shabaeff became known for bas relief sculptures executed in ceramic, often large mosaics for commercial and residential projects, such as a panel with nudes and deer for the Hotel Vancouver. This scene is full of energy and vividly finished, and the glazes include a brilliant gold around the edges, and subtle shades of purple, slate-blue and chartreuse elsewhere. The panel is signed on the lower right hand corner.

"Lion and Bull", Art Deco-Medieval Decorative Painting in Greys and Burnt Sienn
Located in Philadelphia, PA
A marvelous example of Romanesque-Medieval bas relief sculpture interpreted by an American artist in the 1920s, this painting on fabric was executed by Dunbar Beck, the famous muralist. The painting, on one length of cloth, is in two parts -- one portion depicts a bull being attached by a lion, the other depicts a scrolling rope motif. According to a notation on the reverse, both paintings were done for a production of "Oedipus Rex," perhaps in California. Beck was an important muralist at this time, executing a mural for the US Post Office...
