About the Item

One of the rarest and must unusual pieces ever created by the famed Rookwood Pottery Company in Cincinnati, this sculpture of a satyr bearing the weight of a basket of grapes was created in 1915. Gorgeously glazed in a gold hue with a greenish cast, the sculpture is highly three-dimensional, and raking light creates wonderful shadows and contrasts. This piece served originally as a large wall pocket; the interior is glazed in a creamy hue. Rookwood was, arguably, the most important and prolific fine art pottery in the nation, from the Arts Crafts period through the Art Deco area, and this example gives evidence of the fine eye for detail that was characteristic of their output.
