Set of Six Relief-Molded Bisque Porcelain Plaques by Bing Grøndahl, Denmark, 19th Century A refined ensemble of six Danish neoclassical bisque porcelain plaques, executed in crisp white and each housed within its original richly patinated circular walnut frame. Produced by Bing Grøndahl, Copenhagen, and marked with the firm’s underglaze blue monogram “B\&G,” these reliefs reflect the sculptural language and allegorical tastes of the mid- to late-19th century. The scenes, inspired by classical antiquity and putti-filled allegories, are rendered in low relief with remarkable precision and delicacy of line. Each plaque presents a mythological or Arcadian subject: among them, winged figures in flight, Venus-like nudes, and processional groups of children and maidens, many bearing floral garlands or musical instruments. The plaques draw upon the iconographic repertoire of Wedgwood's jasperware and the wider European neoclassical tradition, but with a distinct Nordic clarity and restraint characteristic of B\&G’s bisque production during the period. The refined matte surface of the unglazed porcelain amplifies the sculptural depth of the modeling, contrasting elegantly with the deep-toned wood frames.
