About the Item
Title: Stump Speech, #8
Year: 2015
A to-scale rendering of the cross section of a tree discovered in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, this work is the newest in TJ Volonis’ Stump Speech series. Hundreds of circular copper components are meticulously assembled and soldered together and the ‘pixelation’ (caused by the hexagonal grid formed by the circles) is a foil, contrast, and creates tension against the organic and analog flow of the natural shape it attempts to mimic. The size and energy of this work easily make it the centerpiece of the room.
Each piece in this series is one-of-a-kind and derived from a unique cross section - no two pieces are drawn from the same cross section.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
A self-taught artist, TJ Volonis’ creative work incorporates a wide variety of themes: Human biological processes, the natural world and man's relationship to it, hidden systems, technology and contemporary culture, and the implicit balance between order and chaos, among others. He views his work as a collaboration between the material with its limitations and his own intentions and designs.
TJ received a BA in Japanese Studies from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. After graduating, he moved to Brooklyn and has been a resident of the borough for the last 15 years, designing furniture and creating art for the last 11 of those years. He lives in Park Slope and works out of a metalworks studio in Gowanus.
His work has appeared in: Architectural Digest, LUXE, The New York Observer, Wallpaper* Magazine, Elle Decor, Lonny Magazine, Freshome, Design Milk, Core 77, Artsicle, Gotham Gazette, and Examiner. He was also selected as one of NYC's top emerging artists in December of 2011 and 2013 and was the 2005 Best Emerging Artist in Mixed-Media at the GLAAD OUTAuction.
