About the Item
Three-Dimensional Continental Majolica Charger of Minerva, Late 19th Century
A large and exquisitely modeled Continental majolica charger depicting Minerva, Roman goddess of wisdom and war, rendered in high-relief three-dimensional detail. Measuring 13.5 inches in diameter, this sculptural wall plaque exemplifies 19th-century neoclassical revivalism in ceramics, likely originating in Italy or France.
Minerva is portrayed in profile, her facial features, flowing hair, and elaborate armor all deeply modeled and hand-painted with richly glazed colors. Her crested helmet is adorned with an applied golden griffin—symbol of vigilance and divine protection—and further decorated in relief vignettes depicting mythological battle scenes, chariots, and classical figures. Her cuirass (breastplate) is similarly detailed with bands of Roman soldiers in procession.
The plaque’s border is a tour de force of raised Renaissance-inspired ornament, featuring deeply molded scrolling acanthus, anthemion motifs, and alternating medallion heads and winged masks, symbolizing divine authority and protection. Scattered throughout are owls, the sacred animal of Minerva, evoking wisdom and foresight.
A star-cross emblem at Minerva’s left shoulder further emphasizes her divine guidance and martial strength. The goddess's name is boldly spelled out in raised, gilt-highlighted lettering against a deep green ground.
