About the Item
This late Victorian-era taxidermy diorama depicts a male ring-necked pheasant with beautiful, chestnut-brown plumage and long white tail feathers. Perched atop a rock with an alert posture, the pheasant is housed within a display case typical of the period, surrounded by branches and tall grasses with a painted backdrop of a blue horizon. The case is enclosed with a single-pane glass front and affixed with hardware for wall-mounted display.
By the early 19th century, taxidermy had become a novel attraction in museums and travel exhibitions that allowed visitors to observe animals up close, whether familiar domestic species or those from far off locations, often never seen before. Such displays quickly became popular collector's items for the home, especially for prized game birds and fish.
