Biographical Information
A French artist with diverse practices, Michel Degand explored sculpture, painting, and tapestry from the 1960s onward. His works blend industrial materials and pictorial interventions, creating abstract reliefs dominated by the balance of forms and the tension of materials. The Midaform series fully illustrates this exploration of dynamic assemblages and contemporary sculptural constructions.
Michel Degand, born November 15, 1934, in Loos-lez-Lille (Nord) and died October 19, 2021, in Tourcoing, was a French artist, cardboard designer, painter, visual artist, and sculptor.
Michel Degand was very young when his grandfather, an art glassmaker and conductor, instilled in him a love of music and drawing, leading him to choose the profession of lithographic draftsman, a course taught at the Baggio Technical College in Lille. At the age of 17, he joined the newspaper La Voix du Nord to learn the trade of photoengraver, while simultaneously taking courses in general aesthetics at the Lille School of Fine Arts. Assigned to the French Navy in Paris for his military service, he attended life drawing classes at the Grande Chaumière art school. Back in Lille, he became interested in the revival of tapestry and produced no fewer than 250 tapestries woven from over one hundred designs, primarily at the Pinton workshops in Felletin, but also at the Gobelins Manufactory, the Tournai Academy, and various workshops in Calais and Portugal. Numerous trips to the United States allowed him to exhibit in prestigious galleries such as the Wenger Gallery in San Francisco and the Carlsan Gallery in Chicago. A retrospective of his work was held in 1979 at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille, and again in 2013 at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Arras.
He created several monumental works in tapestry and sculpture for the Lille Courthouse, the Oaks Hotel in Houston, two metro stations in Lille (Rihour and Fives), the Lille Métropole Museum of Modern Art, Euralliance, and the Nord Departmental Council building. In 1993, he devoted himself primarily to painting and held numerous exhibitions for museums including the Tapestry Museum in Tournai, the Boulogne-sur-Mer Museum, the Abbey of Saint-Riquier, the Matisse Museum in Le Cateau, the La Piscine Museum in Roubaix, the MAMAC in Nice, and the Museum of Drawing and Original Prints in Gravelines. His works are regularly exhibited by the Bellint and La Réserve galleries in Paris, the Storme and Dorval galleries in Lille, and the Lagier gallery in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue.
In 2013 and 2014, a new retrospective of his works, tapestries and paintings, was dedicated to him at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Arras and the Cité Nature in Arras, respectively, followed by another in 2019 at the Prieuré d'Airaines.
On October 4, 2019, the city of Loos (European Metropolis of Lille) inaugurated the Espace Michel Degand, an exhibition space that pays tribute to the Loos-born artist. It is described as "an exhibition space that highlights the diversity of the visual arts..."
Poets and writers Emmanuel Looten, Jean Guichard-Meili, Pierre Dhainaut, Alain Réveillon, Gérard Durozoi, Olivier Clynckemaillie, Bruno Vouters, and Jean-Pierre Nicol collaborated with him on the creation of artists' books. In 2013, the writer and poet Pierre Henry wrote a biography of the artist Michel Degand, entitled "The Art of the Poetic."
Degand lives and works in Villeneuve-d'Ascq, as well as in his studio in Roubaix. His work is featured in numerous collections both in France and abroad.
