Giovanni Battista Pittoni (Venezia, June 6, 1687 – Venice, November 16, 1767),
he is an Italian painter, citizen of the Republic of Venice. It is considered to be one of the most representative elements of Venetian Rococo.
Coming from a family of painters, he imparted the art of Francesco Pittoni, with the same name in 1716 as the son of Sansone and Dalila (Pordenone, Collezione Querini)[3]. A very clear indication of the orientation of the painter at the beginning of his activity, an important legacy of the Baroque style, is suggested by the individual stylistic differences with the painting of Antonio Balestra, who worked in Venice in the first twenty years of the Settecento. Attraverso alcune opere compiute dall'artista subito dopo quest'epoca, como il Martirio di san Tommaso (Venezia, chiesa di San Stae) e Diana e Atteone (Vicenza, Museo civico Palazzo Chiericati) si preciseno già i caratteri essenziali della sua pittura: ricchezza del colore, in particular the precious blue, sciolto dispiegarsi delle forme, un treme nonché manierato rigore nel definere i particolari and a soft sense of language that adds to the compositions a note of refined and leziosa preziosità, proper to the European rococo.
To the taste of Sebastiano Ricci and the Tiepolo, for formal plasticity and freshness of color, appartengono the shovel with i Santi Pietro e Paolo e Pio V who worship the Vergine (Vicenza, church of Santa Corona) and the Giuramento di Annibale (Milano, Pinacoteca di Brera) Intorno agli anni venti del '700 la sua personalità si delineaò con più precisione, revealing a carattere vigorous e monumentale negli affreschi. In 1720, the martyrdom of San Tommaso was described in the church of San Stae, and in 1722 and 1730 he worked four times a cycle very large (in one twenty-four years) of the Tombeaux of the Princes, designed by Owen McSwiney, in which he was rappresented. Alcuni dei più celebri uomini della storia britannica. All these realizations were made by chiamati with Canaletto, Marco Ricci and Sebastiano Ricci, Giovanni Battista Cimaroli and other Venetian and Bolognese artists.
Pittoni died in Venice on November 6, 1767. His grave was found in the church of San Giacomo dall'Orio
