About the Item

Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin created around one hundred wallpapers, which were manufactured and flocked by William Woollams Co of London. Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin created around one hundred wallpapers, which were manufactured and flocked by William Woollams Co of London. This appears to be an original 19th century woodblock printing. Almost 2 rolls, with original instructions. Exceedingly rare find of an iconic Gothic Revival design. The Wallpaper was designed by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (1812 –1852) was an English architect, designer, artist and critic with French and Swiss origins. He is principally remembered for his pioneering role in the Gothic Revival style of architecture. His work culminated in designing the interior of the Palace of Westminster in Westminster, London, and its renowned clock tower, the Elizabeth Tower (formerly St. Stephen's Tower), which houses the bell known as Big Ben. Pugin designed many churches in England, and some in Ireland and Australia. He was the son of Auguste Pugin, and the father of Edward Welby Pugin, Cuthbert Welby Pugin, and Peter Paul Pugin, who continued his architectural and interior design firm as Pugin Pugin. An architect by trade, Pugin hoped that by crafting interiors and exteriors reflecting the art of the Middle Ages, he could nudge Victorian society a little bit closer to a romanticized past. In 1836 Pugin published a book entitled Contrasts, which put forth an argument for a return to Medieval aesthetics and social structure. The book compared contemporary buildings against their Medieval counterparts. Though the comparisons were somewhat unfairly skewed in favor of the Middle Ages, the book made a lasting impression: Pugin’s celebration of all things Gothic is credited with inspiring the British Arts and Crafts movement, and the Medieval-style guilds established under its umbrella. The Wallpaper is heavy paper with no adhesive, there are about 2 rolls. The side edge appears to be made for overlapping.

Brunschwig and Fils Boscobel Restoration Medford Inn 1804 Hand-Printed Wallpaper
By Brunschwig Fils
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Brunschwig and Fils Boscobel Restoration Medford Inn 1804 hand-printed wallpaper. Very unusual paper - it is marked as custom hand-printed for the Boscobel Restoration, Inc. with a copyright date of 1977. The Boscobel Restoration is a rebuilt historic mansion (see images 9 and 10) in Garrison, NY using salvaged parts of an original Federal-period home that was demolished in the 1950s. This is a historic pattern, marked on the paper as "Medford Inn, 1804" and a registered design of the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities. The Medford Inn (see image 11) was built in 1804 and became known as a well-known hotel located on Main Street in Medford, Massachusetts. The design of the paper hearkens back to Roman tradition of wall decoration, with a trompe l’oleil effect that mimics ornate panelling and stone inlay. As per the this paper was also produced in a brown colorway and is part of the Digital Public Library of America and Historic New England...
