The Madidi Hummingbirds design is a tribute to the incredible diversity of Andean hummingbirds, of which there are 140 different species. This design features Andean Hillstars, Great Sapphirewings, and Giant Hummingbirds. These super-heroic little birds can fly at speeds which, relative to body length, are greater than any other vertebrate, with wing-speeds of over 80 beats per second. One day, in a conversation about their different tastes, it occurred to them to do an edit of Newton Paisley designs for people who, like Beatrice, think less is more in their interiors. Best-selling Newton Paisley designs were reimagined as one-colour 18th century toile de Jouys; favourite botanical details from other designs were reconfigured in simple airy geometrical repeats. Lizard orchid - Himantoglossum hircinum Goat-like and with tongues like straps (or so it is described by its Latin name), the lizard orchid has long lip petals which are spiralled and dotted with pink or purple in the centre. It is a tall plant which despite its exuberant form, hides in plain site. Rare in the UK, it thrives on certain golf courses and dunes, where the tiny seeds are carried on the golfers’ shoes.
