Italian Modular FerroTipi Bookcase Room Divider, G. Malacrida P. Resmini

20.000 €IVA inclusa

Informazioni sull’articolo

This rare modular bookcase belongs to the FerroTipi series (1968), an experimental body of furniture designed by Gianantonio Malacrida in collaboration with Paolo Resmini, and documented in the critical writings of Anty Pansera on Italian radical and proto-industrial design. Conceived within the advanced design climate of late-1960s Italy, the FerroTipi series explores the expressive rigor of tubular steel structures, reduced gestures, and modular logic. This bookcase exemplifies the series’ architectural approach to furniture: a structural framework that remains visually autonomous while allowing multiple configurations. A defining feature of this piece is its full modular adaptability. The shelving system can be freely customized with interchangeable shelves in glass or wood, allowing the composition to evolve according to spatial and functional needs. The two enclosed storage blocks are particularly distinctive: they open both from the front and the back, transforming the bookcase into a true double-sided element. Thanks to this dual access, the piece was explicitly designed to be positioned at the center of a room, functioning as an elegant spatial divider for large living areas or open-plan interiors, rather than as a wall-bound bookcase. This reflects Malacrida's architectural mindset, where furniture operates as a tool for structuring space rather than merely occupying it. The contrast between the industrial metal frame, wooden volumes, and glass shelves encapsulates the FerroTipi philosophy described by Pansera: industrial aesthetics softened by proportion, rhythm, and human scale. Surviving examples of large modular systems from this series are rare, particularly in such complete and flexible configurations. The bookcase comes from the Malacrida and Resmini architecture studio. Provenance: From the private archive of architect Gianantonio Malacrida (1939– ). Original work by the author, preserved in his personal studio collection As prototypes, they were never put into production, one-off pieces.
