About Accolay (French Mid-Century Ceramics)
Accolay is one of the most important names in French postwar ceramics, synonymous with creativity, freedom of form, and bold decorative experimentation. The story began in 1944, when four young friends—André Boutaud, Louis Dangon, Slavic Paley, and Raude—left Paris and the intellectual atmosphere of Saint-Germain-des-Prés to avoid compulsory labor in Germany during World War II.
They enrolled at the ceramics school in Cluny (Saône-et-Loire), where they studied under Alexandre Kostanda. Initially, they produced ceramic buttons for personal use. Their talent quickly attracted attention, and in 1945, shortly after founding his fashion house, Christian Dior commissioned them to create ceramic buttons, brooches, and jewelry for his first collections. Media coverage of Dior’s work brought immediate success.
On October 26, 1945, the group officially settled in an abandoned factory in the village of Accolay, Burgundy (Yonne), forming a true artistic community. By 1946, thousands of ceramic buttons and jewelry pieces—often multicolored, whimsical, and inspired by animal and vegetal forms—were being produced.
As fashion evolved, Accolay transitioned in 1948 to decorative and functional ceramics, including vases, fruit bowls, photo frames, and small sculptural objects. In 1952, Canadian painter and designer Rafael Giarousso joined the group, ushering in a period of humorous, expressive, and highly original designs that became a signature of Accolay ceramics.
At its peak, much of the village population worked in Accolay’s workshops and sales operations. Their ceramics were widely sold at roadside service stations along major routes to the south of France, notably the N6 and N7, contributing to their broad popularity from the 1950s through the 1970s.
During the late 1960s and 1970s, Accolay experimented further with resin-inlaid ceramics, lamps, and illuminated furniture, reflecting the era’s taste for innovation. The oil crisis and declining road traffic eventually impacted sales. After André Boutaud’s death in 1983, production slowed and finally ended in 1989.
Legacy
The Accolay potters left behind a remarkable body of work spanning 1945–1975, celebrated today for its joyful creativity, sculptural forms, and bold glazing. Their ceramics are now highly collectible and represent an essential chapter in the history of French mid-century modern and studio pottery.
