Informazioni sull’articolo

A beautiful Scandinavian Modern / Swedish Grace vase with amazing glaze. Made by Erik Mornils for Nittsjö, Sweden, 1930s. Excellent condition. No chips, cracks or crazing. Impressed with makers mark. Nittsjö Keramik, founded in 1843 in Rättvik, Dalarna, is one of Sweden’s oldest ceramic factories. It began as a producer of rustic redware for local households, but in the first half of the 20th century it transformed into an important artistic ceramics workshop. This shift became especially clear during the 1930s and 1940s, when Nittsjö combined its strong folk roots with the emerging ideals of modern Swedish design. The 1930s marked a turning point. Painter and designer Jerk Werkmäster, deeply connected to Dalarna’s artistic traditions, worked with Nittsjö during this period. He infused the factory’s ceramics with folk-inspired decoration and motifs drawn from local culture, helping to ground its artistic identity in regional heritage. At the same time, designers like Eva Jancke-Björk introduced streamlined forms and restrained patterns that reflected international modernism. This balance between tradition and innovation became a hallmark of Nittsjö’s interwar production. Equally important was Erik Mornils, who joined Nittsjö already in 1925 and remained there until 1967. Mornils played a central role in shaping the factory’s output for more than four decades. During the 1930s and 1940s, he developed a style that blended robust forms with experimental glazes, often combining earthy terracotta with strong decorative surfaces. His long presence gave Nittsjö continuity and depth, allowing the factory to maintain a consistent artistic voice while also adapting to new currents in Scandinavian design. By the 1940s, Nittsjö’s reputation extended well beyond its local base. Alongside Werkmäster’s folkloric vision and Mornils’s modern-leaning craftsmanship, younger designers such as Signe Persson-Melin briefly contributed to the factory, adding fresh impulses. The production of these decades reflects a unique dual character: both traditional and modern, rooted in Dalarna yet open to wider stylistic trends. This strong foundation helped Nittsjö endure when many other Swedish ceramic factories disappeared in the late 20th century. Today, ceramics from the 1930s and 1940s—particularly those by Jerk Werkmäster and Erik Mornils, who together defined much of the factory’s creative identity—are highly prized by collectors. They represent a moment when Swedish folk heritage and modern design ideals came together in a distinctive and lasting form.
