Informazioni sull’articolo

Lovingly handcrafted by Amitābha Studio in Amsterdam, this one-of-a-kind table lamp unites two rare design legacies from the same moment in time. The ceramic base is an original Flora Gouda vase from the Lotus series, produced in the Netherlands during a brief, transitional period in 1977 — the final years of the Mid‑Century Modern era. Finished in a vivid, inimitable blue glaze, the vase is hand-painted with a crisp, abstract frieze in white — a stylized motif that circles the vessel like a folk-inspired ribbon. This pattern, expressive and rhythmic, is unique to each piece: as marked “Handwerk” on the base, every Lotus vase was painted by hand, not transfer printed. The visual result is striking and refined — a modernist interpretation of Dutch floral tradition, rooted in the country’s long plateel (glazed earthenware) heritage. What makes the Lotus series especially collectible is its rarity. Introduced in 1977 and used for only a short production run, it was one of Flora’s final hand-painted ceramic lines before the factory adopted more modernized techniques in the 1980s. Its bold blue palette, crisp contrasting decoration, and occasional black-glazed accents speak to a refined Mid‑Century Modern aesthetic that confidently stands alongside contemporaneous European design. The lamp’s base, marked with the form number 1513, exemplifies this intersection of heritage and innovation — a final flourish before Dutch ceramic artistry entered its industrial era. To complement this expressive base, we’ve created a bespoke tailored lampshade using Liberty’s “Marquess Garden” fabric in the Lapis colourway — another archival design that, remarkably, also originates from 1977. Originally conceived as a shawl print and recently revived by Liberty of London for interior use, Marquess Garden is a richly detailed Arts Crafts revival pattern. Inspired by Liberty’s 19th-century floral heritage, the design is densely filled with concentric arrangements of blue blossoms, vines, and foliage in shades of indigo, cobalt, and pale sky. Printed on cotton Chesham Sateen, the fabric offers a soft sheen and graceful drape, adding a romantic, historic charm to the silhouette. That both the vase and fabric emerged independently in 1977 makes this piece a poetic convergence — two mid-century reinterpretations of floral tradition, now united in a single heirloom-quality lamp. This lamp would be beautifully suited to interiors that embrace artful detail and historical layering. Think: a Paris-style apartment, where antiques and soft textures meet confident color; a Grandmillennial bedroom filled with vintage textiles and classic prints; or a collector’s library or study, where heritage and modern design overlap. The piece would also sit comfortably in Eclectic, Maximalist, or heritage-modern interiors — any space that welcomes rich pattern, story, and individuality. The lamp was created without harming the original vase in any way. ⸻ Please note: The lamp is fully wired for use in the U.S. Additionally, the listed height includes the lampshade. We also ensure compatibility for global use by offering a free plug customization service to match the electrical standards of your specific country. Known for bold glazes and innovative decor, Flora remained committed to hand-painted traditions well into the 1970s. The Lotus series, introduced briefly in 1977, is considered one of the company’s final artisanal achievements — combining modernist abstraction with the Dutch legacy of floral ornamentation. Each piece in the series was painted by hand, making no two exactly alike. By the 1990s, Flora had merged into Royal Goedewaagen, and the Lotus line now holds a special place as a collectible snapshot of Dutch ceramic history at a turning point in style and production. About Amitābha Studio: Amitābha Studio is an Amsterdam-based design atelier dedicated to transforming historic European ceramics into one-of-a-kind lighting objects. Each lamp is crafted with deep reverence for the original form, using non-invasive methods that preserve the integrity of every antique or vintage vase. We pair these bases with bespoke lampshades—often made from luxurious textiles such as vintage sari silks or fine European fabrics—and finish each piece with carefully selected cords, fittings, and handmade brass elements. Our work is guided by a commitment to sustainability, cultural heritage, and timeless design.
