Dimensions in cm ( H x D ) : 68 x 26 Paul Crist (1950s–2025) was one of the most influential and respected figures in the study, authentication, and restoration of leaded glass and Tiffany lamps. Exceptionally rare in his balance of engineering mastery and artistic intuition, Crist possessed both the technical rigor of a scientist and the eye of a lifelong artist. His scholarship reshaped how collectors, auction houses, and museums understand both Tiffany Studios and the vast world of non-Tiffany makers. By the late 1990s, Crist had become a central authority at Fontaine’s Auctions in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, where he regularly vetted lamps prior to sale and delivered educational presentations for collectors. At a time when interest and prices for leaded lamps were rapidly climbing—and when many non-Tiffany firms remained poorly documented—Crist brought clarity, historical context, and technical precision to a field still full of mystery. During this period, he traveled extensively across the United States, visiting private collections and documenting thousands of lamps. He compiled this material into a massive, continually evolving working archive of photographs and research—raw fieldwork that would later form the foundation of Mosaic Shades, Volume II, the landmark reference on non-Tiffany makers. For decades, collectors quietly opened their doors to Crist, trusting his integrity and scholarly purpose. Crist was known not only for his encyclopedic knowledge, but also for his generosity in sharing it. His explanations were meticulous and vivid, often delivered spontaneously and with contagious enthusiasm. He possessed a rare ability to translate complex construction methods—such as Henry Belcher’s mosaic glass techniques—into clear and memorable instruction. Many collectors and researchers trace the true beginning of their serious understanding of leaded lamps to a single conversation with Paul Crist. Following the publication of Mosaic Shades, Volume II in 2006, Crist turned his focus to what would become his most ambitious achievement: a definitive history of Tiffany Studios and its lamps. This project would occupy him for well over a decade. As new research surfaced, the manuscript underwent continuous refinement and revision. In parallel, anticipation grew for Mosaic Shades, Volume III, intended to complete the documentation of non-Tiffany makers. Serious development resumed around 2019, with collaborative research underway, but Crist ultimately made the deliberate decision to prioritize completion of the Tiffany book. That work was finally published in November 2023 to widespread acclaim and is now regarded as the most comprehensive and authoritative study of Tiffany Studios ever produced. It immediately became the cornerstone reference for scholars, collectors, and auction specialists worldwide. Following the release of the book and the closing of Paul Crist Studios a few months later, Crist entered a new phase of life. Major international auction houses continued to rely heavily on his vetting expertise, while plans were actively underway to complete the long-awaited final volume of Mosaic Shades. On January 16, 2025, Paul Crist passed away unexpectedly after battling health issues. Paul Crist’s legacy is enduring and profound. Through his books, his mentorship, his uncompromising standards, and his lifelong dedication to truth in scholarship, he permanently elevated the study of leaded glass. His work continues to guide collectors, conservators, historians, and institutions around the world, ensuring that the history of these luminous objects is preserved with accuracy, depth, and respect.
