This compelling Antique Shirvan Runner Rug, originating from the East Caucasus around the late 19th century, represents the refined and diverse weaving traditions of the region. Measuring 120 x 196 cm (approx. 3'11" x 6'5"), its elongated format makes it a perfect, historical accent for a hallway, entryway, or bedside.
The rug features a deeply saturated madder red main field, a common and highly desired color in Shirvan textiles. The field is densely populated with repeating geometric and highly stylized floral motifs, including the distinctive stylized Tekke guls (medallions) or stepped lozenges, which create a strong, rhythmic pattern down the center. These central motifs are richly detailed with accents in navy blue, cream, light blue, gold, and dark green.
Characteristic of fine Shirvan weaving, the piece is framed by intricate and narrow guard borders featuring small, repeating geometric motifs, which beautifully complement the busy central design without overpowering it.
Woven from hand-spun wool and colored with deep, lasting natural dyes, this rug offers a dense, low pile and a flexible structure.
