In this witty creation, Henk Jan Sanderman presents a hippo bursting through the canvas, half in and half out of another world. Made from painted porcelain on canvas, the piece plays with illusion and reality, balancing humour with sculptural finesse. The grey-toned hippo contrasts against the crisp white canvas, creating a striking sense of movement.
Sanderman’s art style can be seen as a playful blend of surrealism and sculptural painting, where familiar creatures are given new life in surprising contexts. The textured surface of the porcelain combined with the flat expanse of canvas adds depth, making the viewer question whether the hippo is entering or leaving the space. The naturalistic detailing of the animal’s form anchors the piece in realism, while its unexpected setting pushes it firmly into the conceptual.
The restrained palette—soft greys with the warmth of raw canvas edges—emphasises form over colour, allowing the humour and sculptural presence of the work to shine. “FLIPPO” is both charming and thought-provoking, a joyful reminder that art can be lighthearted while still challenging our perception of space.
Artist biography:
Painter/sculptor Henk Jan Sanderman (1975), born in the Netherlands, currently lives and works in a small town in the middle of Holland. In his studio he renders oil paintings, as well as casting sculptures in porcelain and bronze. The artist’s work defines itself as humorous realism, conveying objects and various subject matter in great detail against a black and white background. In the same hyper-realistic style as his paintings, Henk Jan creates sculptures and wall artwork imbued with impressive life-like accuracy.
His main focus is humorous hyperrealism painting where he sets his subject matter against a white or black background, allowing more space for interaction whilst demonstrating and emphasising intense attention to detail. The artist’s works have an endearing ambience, influenced with their light-hearted aspects. Current works demonstrative innovative merging of the canvas and sculpture, providing a contemporary body of installations.
His works has been featured at Palet magazine, Atelier magazine, Coda museum, Stadsmuseum Harderwijk and museum De Fundatie.
In 2014 Henk Jan participated in the television program "Sterren op het Doek" and created a portrait of Seth Gaaikema. In 2015, he was asked to return for the final season of "Sterren op het Doek", due to being one of the best artists of the past nine seasons.

Henk Jan Sanderman è un pittore olandese. Dopo 12 anni di esperienza di marketing in un ambiente commerciale, Sanderman ha cambiato rotta e ha iniziato a insegnare e a praticare la pittura a tempo pieno. La sua combinazione ideale di interazione sociale e creazione, un vero e proprio Maestro Pittore. I ritratti di Sanderman sono già stati esposti nella rivista Palet , nella rivista Atelier A, nel Museo Coda, nello Stadsmuseum Harderwijk e nel Museo De Fundatie. Nel 2014, Sanderman ha partecipato al programma televisivo Sterren op het Doek e ha realizzato un ritratto di Seth Gaaikema. Nel 2015 è stato chiamato per l'ultima stagione di Sterren op het Doek con Omroep MAX che ha riproposto i migliori artisti delle nove stagioni precedenti. A Sanderman fu concesso di fare un ritratto di Ria Bremer, che alla fine scelse il ritratto realizzato da Sanderman. Dopo l'esperienza acquisita nella realizzazione di ritratti nel maestro della pittura molto realistica, si concentrò sulla realizzazione di qualcosa che gli stava a cuore, opere umoristiche. Il lavoro di Sanderman è l'Iperrealismo Umoristico, in cui l'artista espone i suoi oggetti in modo molto dettagliato su uno sfondo in bianco e nero.
