Refined pair of oil paintings on canvas, framed in carved and gilded wood. The paintings depict two scenes, both centered on Venus and her lover Adonis. In the first painting, set in a lakeside setting, the goddess Venus is depicted reclining on a bed, while opposite her is Adonis, wrapped in a red cloak, holding a spear and a dog on a leash, ready to set off on a wild boar hunt. Around them, cupids flutter and play, engaged in various activities. In the other painting, the scene takes place in a clearing, where nymphs are depicted disarming the cupids by clipping their wings. The cupids are asleep, while the scene is observed from above by the goddess Diana. This pair of paintings exudes great taste and refinement, capable of elegantly decorating any space. The color treatment, the delicacy of the figures, and the idyllic atmosphere are characteristic of the style of Francesco Albani (1578-1660), a Bolognese Baroque painter, and his workshop. On the back of both paintings is a sealing wax stamp bearing the inscription "Paul G. Gross - Galleries Frotrand," attributable to the previous owner. The work is attributed to the Emilian school, dating to around the end of the 18th century.
