Albert Gilbert was more than a designer for Patek Philippe — he was a sculptor of time. From the mid-1950's onward, he created some of the most daring, imaginative, and collectible time only watches in the company’s history. His works, from the asymmetrical “Asymétrie” ref. 3424 to the jeweled Tutti Frutti line and the sculptural Ricochet, are now treated like museum pieces. Many trade in the mid to high five figures, some into six, a testament to how collectors now regard Gilbert as a design icon in the world of horology. Among his masterpieces is the “Manta Ray,” ref. 2554, a watch with broad flaring sides and sweeping lines that seem to glide like the wings of its namesake. Patek itself paid homage to this model decades later with the ref. 5100 re-edition for the new millenium in year 2000. For collectors, the “Manta Ray” is a legend: an avant-garde shape, fully Gilbert yet restrained, and an embodiment of mid-century modern watch design. While most of Gilbert's watches were mens models, this ladies version embodies all of that pedigree while offering something else: exquisite beauty in a package for ladies. Its 18K gold case curves outward like sculpted fins, then narrows with elegance toward the lugs, catching light and shadow with every movement of the wrist. Non dovrebbe sorprendere che un Patek Philippe detenga il record mondiale d'asta per un orologio ( 31,2 milioni di dollari per un Patek Grandmaster Chime, venduto da Christie's). Conosciuto per l'impeccabile maestria artigianale e per alcuni degli orologi più complicati mai creati, il marchio è considerato da molti l'apice dell'alta orologeria. I collezionisti amano semplicemente orologi Patek Philippe.

La casa è stata fondata a Ginevra nel 1839 dagli espatriati polacchi Antoni Patek e Franciszek Czapek. Czapek lasciò l'azienda e nel 1845 Patek si associò all'orologiaio francese Jean Adrien Philippe. Fu l'inizio di una bellissima amicizia.

La coppia, che si rivolgeva agli sfarzosi europei, annoverava tra i suoi clienti Tolstoj, Papa Pio IX e la Regina Vittoria, oltre alla Contessa Koscowicz d'Ungheria, per la quale crearono il primo orologio da polso svizzero nel 1868. L'azienda puntava anche al mercato americano e nel 1851 stipulò un accordo con Tiffany Co. tuttora in vigore.

Durante la Grande Depressione, i fratelli Jean e Charles Stern, che in precedenza avevano fornito a Patek Philippe i quadranti degli orologi, acquistarono l'azienda, che oggi continua a essere gestita dalla famiglia Stern.

Sotto gli Stern, la casa ha sviluppato alcuni dei suoi modelli più famosi, tra cui il Calatrava, un orologio da abito elegantemente minimale introdotto nel 1932 e che prende il nome dalla Croce di Calatrava (logo dell'azienda dal 1887), e il Nautilus, il primo orologio sportivo del marchio, concepito dal leggendario designer Gérald Genta nel 1976.
