Amber beads: 29mm to 10mm, graduated Length: 25 inches Weight: 72.6 grams Tested for 14K gold spacer beads and clasp Condition: Very Good Amber is fossilized tree resin which has been prized as a gemstone since antiquity. It has been used as jewelry from 13,000 years ago with amber ornaments having been discovered in Mycenean tombs. Amber and amber extracts have been used medicinally in traditional Chinese medicine to "tranquilize the mind". Natural amber produces a distinct pinewood fragrance which when heated under the right conditions, produces oil of amber, likened to musk, an aphrodisiac. In ancient China it was customary to burn amber at large festivals and celebrations. Baltic Amber is particularly sought after for its beautiful honey yellow color. Two photographs in this listing show this necklace paired with another natural antique amber necklace...

Rare Etruscan Revival 18K Gold Locket Necklace attr. Eugene Fontenay, Paris 1870
Located in New York, NY
Large, stunning granulated antique French Etruscan Revival locket with the original, equally spectacular large chain. The oval locket exquisitely decorated with a technique known as granulation, where a tiny gold bead is individually applied to a surface to form a geometric pattern. Done entirely by hand and requiring a master goldsmith, this technique is thought to have originated in Sumer approximately 5000 years ago. The Etruscans mastered the process in the first millennium B.C and closely guarded its secret, becoming celebrated for creating some of the most beautiful and technically advanced gold jewelry ever made. Condition: This piece is in very good condition retaining the original interior crystal, the hinges work very well and are precisely calibrated to stay open in place when desired. The back of the locket shows normal wear with just the slightest waviness. The chain is in excellent condition. Composed as a pendant locket on its original chain, the oval gold links reeded on the interior and applied chain link on the exterior, the oval locket decorated with twisted wirework circles and fine applied granulation patterns, suspended from a long bale with quatrefoil granulation. Hinged on the side, opening to reveal a hinged glass panel for a personal memento. French assay mark and maker's mark partially obscured Confident attribution to Fontenay based on partial hallmark and similar published examples. References: Wartski for gold enamelled locket on chain necklace, sold archives; DSF for gold enamelled locket pendant of similar workmanship and design. Fontenay pieces retaining the original chain which may be worn on its own are rare and desirable. Eugene Fontenay...

Exceptional Large Natural Vermillion Color Faceted Antique Baltic Amber Necklace
Located in New York, NY
Superb, rare natural translucent faceted Baltic amber necklace of impressive size, gem quality and color reminiscent of fine rich cognac. This necklace has been tested for natural amber and has a high degree of electrical attraction. The reddish orange, vermillion color is scarcely seen in natural amber necklaces of this scale. Amber has long been associated with the power of attraction and excellent communication, as is the color red- making this necklace doubly desirable. 38.5 inches (97.8cm) long, 31mm by 14mm to 13mm by 9mm Weight: 192.6 grams Late 19th Century Provenance: Estate of a US Ambassador Composed of 67 hand faceted graduated amber beads measuring 31mm to 13mm, well matched, translucent, some with natural inclusions. Slightly varying in shape and faceting consistent with being hand made and soft from handling over time. Very minor abrasions observed under magnification. A necklace of this size and quality would most assuredly have been created for a member of the aristocracy. A very similar necklace is illustrated in Louis Sherr Dubin's The History of Beads, from 30,000 BC to the Present, page 295 with the description: Faceted Baltic amber (succinite) said to have belonged to a member of the Russian imperial court. The amber was cut in the Baltic at Konigsberg. Center bead length, 3.1 cm. Collection Wolf Hunger, London A smaller size faceted amber necklace...

Diamond Rings, Luxury Watches and Other Antique and Vintage Fine Jewelry and Estate Jewelry on 1stDibs

Our love for diamond rings, luxury watches and other antique and vintage fine jewelry and estate jewelry goes back thousands of years.

Jewelry has long been a symbol of spiritual strength, wealth or power and, of course, a means of personal expression. While materials and processes employed by the world’s most popular jewelry housesTiffany Co., Cartier, BVLGARI and others — have evolved over time, humans still gravitate toward many of the same accessories that our ancestors wore.

Ancient Egyptians were often hard at work designing jewelry and adorning themselves with an array of necklaces, rings and other items, and nearly every Egyptian, rich or poor, was buried with some kind of jewelry. When King Tut’s burial chamber was excavated, it revealed a sense of style that inspired Art Deco jewelry designs.

Brooches and pins remain essentials in our jewelry boxes, although we no longer require them to fasten our garments, as was once their primary use. Rings, which have always been signifiers of eternity, still serve as romantic gifts and tokens of affection.

Engagement rings are still widely recognized as symbols of love and commitment — and as it can be difficult to choose the right one, explore our buying guides for a close look at antique engagement ringsArt Deco engagement rings and vintage engagement rings. [Fun fact: It wasn’t until the 14th century that we learned how to effectively cut diamonds, a critical step in revealing the stone’s brilliance.]

Hoop earrings are imbued with symbolism and cultural significance for many, and on view in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Ancient Near Eastern Art Gallery is a pair of simple gold hoops from Mesopotamia dating to between 2600 and 2500 B.C. We’ve even created our own new, sacred symbols — the Cartier Love bracelet, for example, with its distinctive locking mechanism, is an understated and modernist symbol of love’s promise (with its own captivating history to boot). And, crafted by French jeweler Jacques Arpels of Van Cleef Arpels, the Magic Alhambra necklace channels luck for the wearer with its universally adored design, which is informed by four-leaf clovers, a plant synonymous with good fortune.

Whether it’s our sentimental charm jewelry, costume jewelry, chunky retro bracelets or minimalist earrings created by contemporary designers, luxurious jewels can elevate any outfit, regardless of your personal style.

Find a wide-ranging collection of authentic antique, new and vintage jewelry today on 1stDibs.
