About the Item

Indulge in a piece of American History with a pair of silver bangle bracelets belonging to First Lady Betty Ford and President Gerald Ford. The fabulous bracelets are in a red fitted box with blue velvet interior. The bracelets were most likely a gift from the Sultan of Oman, Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said, who ruled Oman for over 50 years. The inner circumference of the bracelets is 7 1/2 inches. The interior is 2 1/2 inches across. The width is 1 1/2 inches (4 cm). Together the bracelets weigh 273 grams. The bracelets are in their original fitted box from Mattrah Jewellers of Oman . As the legendary Betty Ford's son Jack said of his mother and the jewels, "She had an eye for beauty, and she brought back jewelry, scarves, and textiles from every trip—India, Pakistan, the Middle East. It wasn’t about value; it was about what spoke to her.” These fabulous bracelets clearly spoke to Betty Ford. They are stunning and so wearable. And belonging to one of the most influential women in American History, they are an absolute treasure. BETTY FORD Betty Ford (April 8, 1918 – July 8, 2011) was the first lady of the United States from 1974 to 1977, as the wife of President Gerald Ford. As first lady, she was active in social policy, and set a precedent as a politically active presidential spouse. Ford was noted for raising breast cancer awareness following her 1974 mastectomy. In addition, she was a passionate supporter of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). As a supporter of abortion rights, and a leader in the women's rights movement, she gained fame as one of the most candid first ladies in history, commenting on the hot-button issues of the time, such as feminism, equal pay, the Equal Rights Amendment, sex, drugs, and abortion. Surveys of historians conducted by the Siena College Research Institute have shown that historians regard Ford to be among the best and most courageous American first ladies. Soon after leaving office, she raised awareness of addiction when she sought help for, and publicly disclosed, her long-running struggle with alcoholism and substance abuse. After recovering, she founded and served as the first board chair of the Betty Ford Center, which provides treatment services for people with substance use disorders. Ford also became involved in causes related to HIV/AIDS. For years after leaving the White House, Ford continued to enjoy great influence and popularity, continuing to rank in the top ten of Gallup's annual most admired woman poll every year through 1991. Ford was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by George H. W. Bush in 1991. She was also awarded the Congressional Gold Medal as a co-recipient with President Ford in 1998. Here is a singular opportunity to acquire an object of American history that Betty Ford cherished throughout her life. Her jewels were of the highest quality and are reflections of her impeccable style. The stunning bracelets are guaranteed to be from the personal collection of President Ford and First Lady Betty Ford and were acquired from the sale of their collection. The bracelets can be worn every day or at the most glamorous affair. They are treasures to be passed on for generations. With their provenance from the legendary Betty Ford they are a testament to the power of women today.
