About the Item
One exceptional and rare set of Victorian 14 karat yellow gold Taille d’Épargne wedding bangles, exquisitely decorated with black floral enamel. Each bracelet is crafted with a secure box and safety clasp, measuring 9.5mm wide to fit a 6-inch wrist, and together weighing 27.06 grams.
In the 1860s and 1870s, it was customary for a groom to present one bracelet to his intended upon engagement and the matching piece on their wedding day, to be worn as a symbolic pair, one on each wrist. Complete sets are now highly prized, as they were often divided between daughters and many became separated over time. The black enamel work, known as taille d’épargne (meaning “savings of the cut”), involves filling finely engraved designs with opaque black enamel. While commonly associated with mourning jewelry, this technique was also used on wedding bangles so they could serve dual purposes—joyfully worn in marriage, yet suitable to wear again should mourning arise.
This set beautifully preserves its history, offering both rare completeness and the timeless elegance of Victorian craftsmanship.
