Coro Craft "Carmen Miranda" Camelia Cuff Bracelet from 1939

About the Item

Presented here is the truly stunning and extremely desirable Camellia cuff racelet by American fashion jewelry company Coro. It has become known as the Carmen Miranda bracelet as she wears two of them in the 1948 film "A Date with Judy" while singing Cuanto le Gusta. The bracelet design was patented in 1939 and the piece introduced for sale the same year. The design consists of two C shape wide pieces that are cut out with a branch running across the opening with one open Camelia, leaves, two semi closed camellias and one tiny bud on each side. The bracelet is gold plated with a large round green or an oval red glass cabochon in the center of each Camellia flower. The petals of the flowers are rhodium plated to set off the clear pave' rhinestones. The leaves are enameled in dark green. Additionally, there are two small closed buds with blue glass pear shape cabochons. The bracelet has an inner circumference of 7 inches. It is 1.5 inches wide and has a depth of .5 of an inch at the flower at the green glass cabochon center. On the inside at the bottom is a rectangular plaque inscribed Coro Craft, with one word about the other, in script. This is an earlier signature dating it to the 1939 or early 1940s. The bracelet shows very very little wear with a few scotches or pin size nicks in the green enamel. Additionally, the former owner had the push pin tongue of the clasp and the safety chain custom replaces in 18K gold. The last four photos show the replaced 18K gold bar and clasp tongue. The bracelet is a well cared for and loved piece in great condition and perfectly wearable. The Coro Craft 'Carmen Miranda' Bracelet is verified in many reference books including American Costume Jewelry, Art Industry, 1935-1950" American Costume Jewelry: Art Industry, 1935-1950" [Roberto Carla Ginelli Brunalti, Roberto Brunialti] Volume 1 (page 107, pictured) and book "Jewels of Fantasy: Costume Jewelry of the 20th Century" [Deanna Farneti Cera] (page 163, pictured), book "Fun Jewelry" [Nancy N. Schiffer] (page 40, pictured). Coro was begun in 1901 by Emanuel Cohn and Carl Rosenberger who opened a small accessories store on Broadway in New York City. Not until 1943, did the company name Coro, a contraction of the first two letters of each partner's last name, change to Coro, Inc. Beginning in 1924 Adolph Katz was the man in charge of selecting the designs Coro would manufacture, commission to be manufactured, and sell. Adolph Katz choose the designs from a large pool of designers, many of whom went on to become known by their own names in their own or other companies. Other designs were picked from portfolio drawings sold by unknown artists. Coro went on to produce a high end ‘couture’ line called Vendome, imitating many French designs, and also later made jewellery for Oscar de la Renta.

A large statement rhinestone bracelet by De Liguoro circa 1980. The cuff consists of repeating zig zag rows of gold, red and clear emerald cut rhinestones set into shiny gold plate metal. The inner length is 8 inches with 1/2 inch opening. The outer length is 9.75 with a 1/2 inch opening. The cuff is 2.5 inches wide. Interior in a satin gold finish. At one end is the oval signature plaque. In the middle is a round signature plaque. Both inscribed "di Liguoro." Gianni De Liguoro founded the company in the 1970s and continues today with expanded lines of hats, gloves, eye glasses and swim wear. De Liguoro has produced couture bijoux for over fifty years and an exhibition was dedicated to the company by the Museo del Bijoux in Casalmaggiore. The only museum dedicated to jewelry in Italy.
