About the Artist: Matthew Charley
Raised on the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico, Matthew Charley draws deep inspiration from the strength, spirituality, and beauty of Diné history and culture. His artistry reflects the textures and patterns of the natural world surrounding his home, as well as the timeless elegance found in traditional Navajo adornment.
In Charley’s words:
“Tradition is passed through it, culture is passed through it — the history of our people is tied within the art. Our people had style back then; we wanted our outfits to be complemented with beautiful jewelry. Just look back at the old photos — you’ll see the jewelry in its purest form. The jewelry is home to them, and seeing that is what inspires me.”
