About Tufa Casting
Tufa casting is a traditional Navajo technique in which molten metal—often silver or gold—is poured into a hand-carved tufa stone mold. Each mold can only be used once, ensuring that every piece is entirely unique and a singular work of art.
About the Artist
Ric Charlie is a self-taught Navajo silversmith and goldsmith celebrated internationally for his tufa-cast creations. His work is distinguished by the fine linear carvings and textures he achieves using dental tools on tufa stone, complemented by his innovative use of colorful patinas and gemstones.
Since the 1970s, Charlie has drawn on traditional Navajo techniques while continually expanding the artistic possibilities of jewelry design. Rejecting convention, he often moves beyond turquoise to explore rich tones of gold, rust, red, purple, blue, and green, achieved through carefully controlled patination.
Ric studied jewelry design at Arizona State University and the University of Arizona, later mastering tufa casting after being inspired by Preston Monongye and Charles Loloma. His accolades include numerous awards from the Heard Museum and Santa Fe Indian Market, including Best of Show, Best of Class, and the Raymond Dewey Memorial Award for Excellence in Tufa Stone Casting.
Today, Ric Charlie continues to teach and mentor emerging Native artists while creating one-of-a-kind collector pieces sought after by galleries and connoisseurs worldwide.
