About Carico Lake Turquoise
Carico Lake turquoise comes from a large active mine in Nevada. In recent decades, it has been mined only intermittently, making it relatively scarce. Known for its striking green to blue-green hues and distinctive spiderweb matrix, Carico Lake turquoise is among the finest in North America. Its unique coloration and rarity make it a prized addition to any collection.
Tufa Casting
Tufa casting is a traditional Navajo silversmithing process in which molten silver is poured into a hand-carved mold made from porous volcanic tufa stone. Each mold can be used only once, ensuring that every tufa cast piece is a one-of-a-kind creation that bears the unique texture and character of the stone from which it was formed.
About the Artist: Julian Chavez
Julian Chavez is a distinguished Navajo silversmith whose work blends deep cultural tradition with a bold personal aesthetic. Represented in the juried artist roster of the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA), he exhibits regularly at renowned venues such as the Santa Fe Indian Market.
Chavez’s artistry is defined by his command of heavy-gauge sterling silver and his refined use of traditional techniques such as stamping, repoussé, and bezel setting. His pieces often bear the hallmark “JC” or his full signature, a mark of authenticity and pride in craftsmanship.
Drawing inspiration from classic Navajo metalwork, Chavez’s designs are known for their strength, rhythm, and clarity. Whether through a dramatic wide cuff or a bold statement necklace, his creations allow both the silver and the stones to speak with equal power. As Chavez himself describes his approach: “Old-style Navajo silversmithing… I use various types of stones and techniques to create extraordinary pieces.”
Renowned for his use of substantial, hand-cut silver and vibrant natural turquoise, Chavez crafts jewelry that is both rooted in tradition and distinctly contemporary in its presence. Each piece stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Navajo silversmithing—honoring the past, engaging the present, and offering wearable art of lasting significance.

Navajo Kingman Turquoise and Sterling Bracelet
Located in Coeur d Alene, ID
Navajo large turquoise slab bracelet. The turquoise is from the Kingman Mine in Arizona. This bracelet has an exceptionally beautiful sky blue stone (over 2") with twisted rope and bead border. Nice patina! This bracelet came from Arizona (Kingman Mine), we purchased in 2010. It was made by a Navajo silversmith during the period before they marked their work (most probably around 1960-70s). It not enhanced, it is a 100% untreated natural turquoise stone. It was first mined by the Native Americans many years before Europeans came to America. Probably at least 1,000 years ago. Much later a number of individuals and companies owned and used the mine.
The Kingman Mine is located in an area called Mineral Park in Arizona. It was discovered by James Haas in the late 1800’s. In the late 1880’s to the early 1900’s, Mineral Park was mined by the Aztec Turquoise Co., the Los Angeles Gem Co., Arizona Turquoise Co., Southwest Turquoise...
