Tufa Casting
Tufa casting is a traditional Navajo technique in which molten silver is poured into a hand-carved tufa stone mold. Because each mold can be used only once, every tufa cast piece is a singular, original work of art.
About the Artist
Born in 1982, Philander Begay has been creating jewelry since 2002. Taught by his brother Darryl Begay and his uncle Bobby Begay, Philander continues a distinguished family legacy of Navajo silversmithing that traces back to master artisans such as Timmy Begay and Kenneth Begay.
Influenced by leading Native jewelers including Raymond Yazzie, Aaron Anderson, Preston Monongye, and Jesse Monongye, Philander is celebrated for his exceptional skill in true tufa casting — carving semi-solid sandstone molds to create intricate bracelets, buckles, bolo ties, and pendants. Each mold disintegrates after a single pour, ensuring that every piece is entirely unique.
Philander draws inspiration from his upbringing in Tuba City, Arizona, near Hopi lands. His work often depicts Pueblo scenes and Kachina dances, reflecting the cultural richness and interconnection of Southwestern traditions.
A rising star among contemporary Navajo artists, Philander Begay has received numerous honors, including the Artists Choice Award at the Santa Fe Indian Market (2007) and First Place in Class at the Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair
Market (2014). His tufa-cast jewelry is highly sought after by collectors for its refined detail, cultural depth, and one-of-a-kind artistry.
