A Victorian Etruscan Revival Gold Armlet,
circa 1880.
A rare Victorian 18k brushed gold Etruscan Revival armlet to wrap three times around the arm, the ends accentuated with stylised snake's heads created from fine strands of gold cord and finely worked palmettes in relief; of exceptional quality.
Jewellery inspired by the archeological findings of the 19th century became very fashionable especially from around 1860 onwards and was thought after by intellectuals, grand tourists and aristocracy.
Well-known jewellery makers of the time created high quality pieces of outstanding beauty using and enhancing ancient jewellery-making techniques.
The present armlet is an exquisite Victorian interpretation of the well-known antique Dacian armlets from ca 1st century BC to 1st century AD. The multi-spiral armlets were used in these times as votive offerings, high rank insignia and also currency. The ends of the armlets could be adorned with snake heads or palmettes which are indicative of the region they were made.
